President makes first official visit to Gozo

A month in since starting the role of President of Malta, President Myriam Spiteri Debono visited Gozo on Saturday

The official visit to Gozo began with a mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu in Għarb. Mass was celebrated by the Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Anton Teuma. In his homily, Bishop Teuma called on the people of Malta and Gozo to come together to move forward in their social, political, human, and Christian life.

The visit to Gozo continued with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument commemorating the Gozitans who lost their lives during the Second World War in Independence Square in Victoria. There she greeted the members of the Scout group as well as the public who were present.

Spiteri Debono visited the Banca Giuratale where she signed the visitors’ book. She then visited the Ċittadella where she also met many other people.

The President’s visit to Gozo continued in the afternoon with a visit to the Ċittadella cultural centre during which she had a meeting with the Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri.

Afterwards, Spiteri Debono visited the Gozo Diocese where she was welcomed by the Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Anton Teuma.

The last stop on the island of Gozo was at the Gozo General Hospital where, accompanied by the Minister for Health, Jo Etienne Abela, she visited the maternity ward and the MRI Department. In a few words, the President thanked all the staff for their commitment and dedication towards people in need.
