Prime Minister Robert Abela said that he is "not ready to let the sovereignty of the people be lost," during a speech in a political event in Birkirkara on Thursday while referring to the magisterial hospitals inquiry being closed ahead of the upcoming June elections.

The PL said that Abela stressed that he has a constitutional obligation to exercise checks and balances upon the other two pillars of democracy. He alleged that the inquiry has undermined a process of justice, and that the inquiry has done a disservice to the rest of the Judiciary.

He said that the 8th of June is the time for the Labour Party's plans for each locality to be approved and that these plans will strengthen all Maltese and Gozitans. Speaking in Birkirkara, he said that there is a clear plan for the locality which will continue to strengthen and increase the services offered to the residents and ensure that the locality benefits from the good that is being done in the country.

Abela said that some of the projects which have been carried out in Birkirkara include the opening of a new clinic, the Bengħajsa Park which will continue to be expanded, the closure of the 31st March plant and that of San Lucjan where the process to start dismantling the tanks is underway so that a 'state of the art' project can be carried out. He added that work is also underway for a new civic centre to be established in Birżebbuġa, and that the shore-to-ship project in the freeport is being implemented which will result in cleaner air and a reduction in noise for the residents.

Speaking on inflation, the Prime Minister said that a Labour government has never introduced new burdens and has kept energy prices stable. He made mention of the support which is being given to first-time buyers. He also referred to the Stabbiltà scheme and said that Malta's inflation rate has fallen month after month since its introduction, with inflation now being below the European average. He added that the reduction in inflation in food prices is now also starting to reflect in a reduction of inflation in other products and services.

Moving to the topic of PL candidates for the upcoming European Parliament elections, Abela said that all the candidates are in favour of Malta and are the best choice for the Gozitan and Maltese people. He added that they all come from different backgrounds with different experiences.

Abela concluded that the success of the PL movement is that it is close to the realities of the people and that the government has worked to turn the people's requests into the fulfilment of their aspirations. "We will stay close to the realities of the people and we will address the needs of the people."
