Scientific Research at St John’s co-cathedral

Malta Independent Monday, 5 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The documentation and research is being conducted by an Italian public entity, the Ente Italiano per le Nuove Tecnolgie, l'Energia e l'Ambiente (ENEA). This agency was founded in 1983 to adapt methods that were formally used in nuclear research for the protection of cultural heritage.

The Italian chapel project includes, among other things, thermography to identify the kind of paints that were used, humidity, and so on, infra-red reflectography to show material under the stone, painting, radiography to identify techniques used in the bronzes and paintings, and x-ray to reveal information about pigments and other materials used in the artistic pieces.

ENEA are also monitoring the temperature and humidity in the chapel and in the German chapel to assist the restorers in identifying climatic problems. The project is being led by Prof. Maurizio Diana with the coordination of Dr Ray Bondin on behalf of VRP.

This project is financed by the Italian government through the Financial Protocol and is being carried out in collaboration with the St John’s co-cathedral Foundation.

It has already revealed many interesting features in the artefacts, such as how the artist changed his mind and now the documentation is being studied.
