Marica Cernigliaro, 27 from Bugibba, was accused of seriously injuring her Algerian husband Mourad Mekhoukhe by stabbing him with a sharp, pointed instrument at 4.15am yesterday. She also allegedly bit his face, injuring him slightly. The woman was charged with being in possession of a weapon while committing these crimes.
Mrs Cernigliaro pleaded not guilty to all the charges against her and was granted bail against a Lm5,000 personal guarantee. The woman claimed her husband did not give her money to support their children. The accused also said her husband used to beat her and had been with another woman before the alleged incident took place.
Inspector Joseph Mercieca prosecuted while Dr Stefano Filletti appeared for the accused.
