Two Accused of attempted theft and assault

Otis Cassar, 32, and Ramona Vassallo, 33, both from Valletta, were accused of trying to steal a Toyota Starlet parked in Pope Pius V street in Valletta and with damaging the said car to the detriment of Ersilia Briffa.

The two were also accused of assaulting, offending and resisting several police officers including police inspector Ramon Mercieca.

Moreover they were accused of breaching the peace, swearing in public and disobeying police orders.

Cassar alone was accused of seriously injuring inspector Mercieca by hitting him with a chair and hurling an ashtray in his direction.

He was also accused of relapsing.

Vassallo alone was accused of offending police inspector Josric Mifsud and also of relapsing and breaching a court judgement handed down on 3 September this year.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them and they were remanded in custody.

Police inspector Josric Mifsud and Alex Grech prosecuted while Dr Patrick Valentino appeared for the defendants.
