Just a week before the killing, Nationalist Party supporters were attacked at Zejtun where the party tried to hold a mass meeting.
They were difficult times for Malta, with the Malta Labour Party in government in spite of obtaining a minority of votes in the 1981 election. The Nationalist Party was returned to government in May 1987 after constitutional amendments were made to allow the party that obtains the majority of votes to win the election.
