Following a fine 28-12 victory over the United States on Wednesday evening, the Maltese youth national side continued its impressive march in style beating Phoenicians 34-14.

The Maltese, under the guidance of coach Milos Stanisavljevic, got off to a great start as they ran off into a 7-0 lead which continued to increase to 13-1 midway through the first period. Gradually, Phoenicians started to settle down, however they could not stop Malta from building a 20-5 advantage by half time.

The match resumed along the same lines during the second period as the Maltese continued piling up the pressure with the Phoenician players doing their best to avoid a heavy defeat.

Malta’s best scorers were Philip Mifsud, Ian Turban, Mark Gilson and Daniel Truninger, all of whom scored five goals each. On the other hand, Chris Zammit and Chris Magro scored five goals each for Phoenicians.

The match was controlled by Tanya Baldacchino and Alan Grima.

In the day’s second match England beat the United States 20-18 in a very close affair with the English win maturing in the latter stages of the match after the United States were in the driving seat for most of the second period.

Cieron Williams was England’s top scorer with seven goals while Robert Atkinson scored six goals for the United States.

The match was controlled by Clyde Borg Conti and Noel Fsadni.

After the first two matches of the first phase, Malta leads the pack with four points followed by England and Phoenicians with two. The United States lie pointless in the bottom of the group
