Meridians of
Barnahmida
The past weeks saw the launch of the first book by the young up and coming author Alan Farrugia. Alan sees himself as a concerned voice of his generation and believes that younger people should be writing and expressing themselves more, rather than letting older people do it for them. This was the catalyst that set Alan off and he began writing what would later become Meridians of Barnahmida, his first novel.
If this novel had to be a cake, the icing would surely be the thorough analysis of all that's pop, cult, or still underground. On the other hand, the dough, the core of the book is made with strong emotional and philosophical ingredients.
The book is a first-person narration of a drug? blasted mug named Ciro Jimenez, a man struggling to remain clean while suffering the repercussions of his misspent past.
Most of the story revolves round his relationship with the dark and astonishing Jairo Mendoza, who is revealed to the reader as the story develops. The two men meet when Ciro nearly runs Jairo over when he appears out of nowhere and collapses in the middle of the road in front of his car. From that moment on Jairo starts to reveal his past, as well as ancient stories of legends and doctrines long forgotten.
With countless twists in the tail, this book creates endless curiosity, leaving the reader hanging on to find the many hidden messages. It is a must read for all those who associate themselves with Generation X, delivering a great account through the author's fantastic narrative approach.
