Contrary to claims by Opposition MP Noel Farrugia, the eco-tax on plastic items will not have any effect on the agriculture sector, claimed the government in an Information Department statement.
The plastic used by farmers to cover their products and the crates in which they pack and transport their produce will not be subject to eco-tax.
The tax on plastic items is aimed at reducing the use of plastic rubbish and carrier bags that are hazardous to the environment, and promoting the use of degradable materials.
Mr Farrugia’s comments, claimed the statement, suggest he had not read the legal notice on the issue or had not fully understood the clauses regarding the eco contribution
measures.
By introducing eco-tax on plastic items, the government aims to reduce pollution caused by them. Farmers will also benefit from the reduction of toxins emitted from the burning of this material, resulting in a better product to be sold to the consumers.
