Local Football: Premier League Can be reduced to eight teams from 2006-07

Malta Independent Friday, 14 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The premier League can be down sized from ten to eight as from season 2006-07. This issue was discussed during a meeting between Premier club officials and the MFA officials.

The clubs are in favour of the down sizing with the proposed change to materialize next season. In fact it was proposed that next season's Premier League will be played on a single phase, that is there will be no Championship and Relegation Pool.

The League is proposed to be on three rounds, with three relegations and one promotion from the First Division League, and this will bring the total to eight clubs as from 2006-07.

It is not clear how many teams will be relegated as from 2006-07, with two options proposed. The first is that two teams will relegated, with the same number being promoted from the First Division League, whilst another option could be that the bottom placed team be relegated, and the seventh placed will have to play a decider with the second placed from the First Division League.

Further discussions will be held, until the new format is sanctioned by the MFA. However the present, much talked about two phase format seems certain to be abolished.
