The Nationalist Party College of Councillors has condemned the decision taken by Labour-led Zurrieq local council against the introduction of bring-in sites in the locality.
In a statement, the college said that Nationalist councillors Melvyn Mangion and Mario Ellul had presented a motion proposing the introduction of a waste separation scheme, as has been done by other local councils.
The Labour majority voted against the motion, which means that Zurrieq residents will not have waste separation facilities. This creates an inconvenience for the residents and shows the Labour councillors’ lack of sensititivity towards the environment.
The reason given by the Labour councillors to support its decision is that Zurrieq residents need to be educated how to separate their waste. This shows a lack of confidence in the residents, the college added.
The Nationalist government finances this project and councils receive money for them to take part in the waste separation scheme. The Labour councillors have opted to lose these funds, the statement concluded.
