60 Second Interview - Conrad Buttigieg

Malta Independent Sunday, 16 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Conrad Buttigieg’s job at Unifaun Theatre Company is backstage. Marketing, PR, operations, sponsors, just name it and you’ll probably see that Conrad is there somewhere. This, he says, can be quite hectic at times but he also enjoys the diversity it brings with it. He is a firm believer in the quality of Unifaun Theatre’s productions but above all in the benefits only culture and arts can provide to society. Theatre, says Conrad, has the power to bring the much-needed changes in the mentality and culture of the Maltese. He also hopes that more and more young people get to enjoy local theatre. He is presently working behind the scenes for their next production Two which will take place at St James Cavalier theatre-in-the-round on the weekends of 21 to 23 and 29 to 30 April. Two is a double-hander by leading British playwright, Jim Cartwright with well-known actors Edward Mercieca and Pia Zammit in a variety of 14 different roles. Very challenging for the actors, says Conrad.

n How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

That is how young am I? 23 years young then. Leo if I’m not mistaken (I don’t like horoscopes, they’re too obvious). 7 August 1982 is my birthday.

n What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

Designing, creating and inventing.

n What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Living your dream.

n What is your favourite occupation?

Don’t know yet but I think I am on the right track, that is, industrial design. Still a very long way to go but.

n What is your greatest fear?

Fear.

n What is it that you most value in your friends?

Honesty.

Have not thought about it yet, will I have time to think about it? Is it worth thinking about?

n What is your greatest extravagance?

Sadly I can’t afford any extravagances for now….

n What is your greatest regret?

Not having discovered arts in me at a much younger age. Well, on the other hand I fully experienced sports, which is positive.

Myself.

n Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

Am quite happy with my talents.

n What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Not loved, lonely and unwise.

n Where would you like to live?

In a cosmopolitan city

full of energy, opportunities, different/new

people, lots of culture and arts and above all open-mindedness.

n What is your most marked characteristic?

Creativity.

n Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

Various. Maybe Adriano Celentano in particular.

n What is it that you most dislike?

Conservative thinking. Bullshit talk.

n What is your motto?

Born originals, how comes it to pass, that we die copies?
