The 60 Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) recruits who have successfully completed their Basic Military Training Course yesterday performed their passing out parade at the AFM Headquarters, Luqa Barracks.

The recruits, 57 men and three women, underwent an 18-week programme which included physical fitness training, foot and weapons drill, skill-at-arms weapons training, basic battle skills, first aid, international humanitarian law, and instruction periods on the AFM’s role, history and current organisation.

Speaking during the parade, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi expressed his appreciation at the AFM’s sense of duty and sacrifice. Dr Gonzi went over the events since the last passing out parade and praised the AFM for its stark service especially during the difficult months when irregular immigrants’ landings were most frequent. He also spoke about the army’s efficiency during air and sea operations. Prime Minister Gonzi added that although Malta is a small country with limited resources, it has an army of which it should be proud. He promised that during next year, the government will continue investing in the army with a view to upgrade it, as is already being done through the review programme.

Addressing the new soldiers, Dr Gonzi wished them all the best in their new career. He also expressed his appreciation to the AFM’s families who, he said, are always there to lend encouragement and support.

The recruits were also addressed by the AFM Commander in Chief, Brigadier Carmel Vassallo, who congratulated them on their excellent drill. He said that the new recruits have been subjected to harsh training and treatment, with the aim of making them good soldiers. The Brigadier said the instructors do not like mistreating and shouting at new recruits; however, it was their duty to do so and recruits should remain grateful to them. Brigadier Vassallo said that besides the academic subjects, the new soldiers have also learnt two important lessons: discipline, and the control of their emotions. He exhorted the new soldiers to serve their country unconditionally, and welcomed them in the country’s military community.

During the parade, Dr Gonzi awarded plaques to the best recruit of the course, Gunner Lucienne Desira, and runner-up John Lewis Cassar.
