Celaine Buhagiar started her dancing career at the age of three. She commenced her training with a local dance school focusing mainly on classical ballet, modern dance, tap, ballroom and Latin American. In 1996 she was professionally qualified with the National Association of Teachers of Dancing and in 1999 with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing both in the UK. She became a member of the Malta Dance & Dancesport Council, a position that she still occupies today. In 1999 Celaine with her former dance partner won the Professional Latin American championship. She was co-director of Dance 2000 for six years. In October 2005, Celaine launched Dancel Studio, her present dance school that currently hosts around 70 students, aged three years upwards. Celaine is always involved with projects that include television and stage productions. She is also the choreographer of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment and Hermann Bonaci Productions next musical production Flashback, the live spectacular show featuring hits from the 1970s and 1980s which is being held at the Catholic Institute on 10 and 11 March. What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?
Dancing and teaching for sure…preferably without any wrinkles.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I don’t believe that there’s perfect happiness, as something negative always comes along every now and then… but I always try to take a positive approach, to feel good about life and people around me.
What is your favourite occupation?
Teaching and doing choreography together with my dance team is fun and challenging… I just love it… My full-time job as a radio producer and programmes coordinator at Campus FM is also a pleasant experience.
What is your greatest fear?
Growing old and losing my loved ones.
What is it that you most value in your friends?
That they are always there when I really need a shoulder to cry on. I feel very lucky in this respect as my best friend is like a sister to me.
How would you like to die?
In my sleep, preferably near my loved one so I give him a fright …
What is your greatest extravagance?
Definitely shopping and indulging in Chinese and Indian food.
What is your greatest regret?
I did not have a chance to say goodbye to my grandpa before he died.
What is your most treasured possession?
Definitely my parents… without them life would have been very difficult.
Which talent would you most like to
have apart from the ones you already
have?
When I was six years old I used to learn
the piano but then I moved on to dancing because I didn’t like my teacher... I wish I
hadn’t stopped!
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
People in third world countries without the basic necessities of life.
Where would you like to live?
I always dream of a cosy cottage somewhere in the mountains…
What is your most marked characteristic?
My outgoing personality helps me a lot in my career. I’m also a person who hates saying no to people.
Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?
Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul II.
What is it that you most dislike?
People who look down on others and make them feel that they are worthless.
What is your motto?
My motto comes from a film called Strictly Ballroom: “A life lived in fear is a life half lived.”
