Commissioner for Children Carmen Zammit has expressed concern about the negative effect on vulnerable children when they are exposed to public discussion and speculation.

The effect of programmes and articles in the media may have long-lasting repercussions on these children, said Ms Zammit. The effects did not come to an end, once the programme had been broadcast or the news item read, she said.

The commissioner appealed to everyone to put the best interests of children first when planning programmes or articles concerning children. This was of even greater importance when the identity of the child had been made public, she said.
