A police sergeant yesterday appeared in court to answer charges of assaulting and slightly injuring a French senior citizen residing in Malta.

David Sant, 47, from Sliema, pleaded not guilty to assaulting and slightly injuring a French pensioner residing in Malta on 10 May in St Julian’s. He was also accused of committing a crime he was duty bound to prevent.

The court, presided over by magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona, ordered the prosecution to provide copies of the alleged incident to the defence, and to provide a copy of a medical statement which states that the accused had deep scratch marks as a result of the confrontation. The court set bail against a personal guarantee of Lm200. Police superintendents Mario Spiteri and Sharon Tanti prosecuted while Dr Jason Azzopardi and Dr Kris Busietta appeared for the accused.
