Three former General Workers’ Union officials yesterday filed separate official letters in court calling on the union – their former employer – to pay them the outstanding wages and compensate them for outstanding vacation leave they are still owed.

Former section secretaries Josephine Attard Sultana, Karmenu Vella and Manwel Zammit claimed that between them they are owed Lm7,400 and compensation for a total of 494 days of vacation leave for which they were entitled.

In her official letter, Ms Attard Sultana said she was owed Lm2,216.19 for three months of work. Moreover, she said the union owed her Lm90.28 as part of her quarterly allowance, Lm13.02 in petrol allowance and compensation for 239 days of vacation leave that she did not use since her employment was terminated. She also said she is owed Lm642.79 as travel allowances and expenses for which she was never reimbursed.

Mr Vella said he was owed Lm2,219.19 for three months of work and compensation for 193 days of vacation leave while Mr Zammit said he was owed Lm2,219.19 and compensation for 62 days of vacation leave.

The three former union officials called on the union to pay them what they are owed and warned of further legal action in default.
