From Mr J. L. Gatt
I was eight years old when my family emigrated to Australia. I grew up there, worked hard and eventually retired. At this point in my life, I had various options where to retire and I chose Malta, not particularly because it’s my birthplace, but mainly because of its fascinating history and unique buildings much bigger countries can never match.
So I was really horrified to read about the recommendation to MEPA to build a two-storey house and swimming pool adjacent to Gozo’s prehistoric Xaghra Stone Circle (TMIS, 29 July).
I cannot believe that such a thing was actually recommended in the first place. How low can it go just to accommodate an individual; we just bend the rules and ignore any consequences. When are we going to understand how important and unique our historical sites are? When it’s too late?
Many sites have already been desecrated by quarries, dumping and encroaching building. When are we going to stop and think?
