Continued Surveillance in sensitive areas

Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

Over the past month, the IPSL staff attached to MEPA carried out monitoring of Bahrija and succeeded in detecting four different fires. In one particular case the Civil Protection Department had to be called to put out a fire. Someone setting light to rubber tyres had started this fire. A more serious conflagration was thus prevented and a carob tree was saved.

The IPSL staff also succeeded in convincing owners to clear brick and rubble from two different locations both in scheduled properties. The building of illegal rooms was also stopped. In one instance, a person was caught red handed doing excavations. They also detected several unauthorized developments that are now being followed by the enforcement team. Work was stopped. Through this work, MEPA succeeded in identifying users of the Ras il-Pellegrin gate and the authority can now proceed with its investigations.

Monitoring is now being extended to three other locations: Wied il-Kbir, Delimara and Wied Sewda.

The public is reminded that the following numbers should be used when detecting illegalities.

Illegal Development: 2123 1159
