60 Second Interview - Dorothy Bezzina

Malta Independent Sunday, 10 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Dorothy Bezzina is the eldest of seven children. Being raised in a musical environment, she naturally developed her devotion to music and the performing arts. Her debut as a performer was made at a tender age. Theatre credits include Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show (Masquerade), Liesl in The Sound of Music, Claire Holmes in The Secret Garden, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Fiddler on the Roof (ActReact), among others. Dorothy was also awarded a scholarship at the International TV School in Belgium by Masquerade’s Faculty of Drama. This offered her the opportunity to further her skills in acting for television, presentation and scriptwriting. However, her greatest passion is singing and experimenting with harmony. A wide vocal range makes possible her versatility, which varies from classical to pop, soul, ballads, rock and musical theatre. Apart from being a professional singer for special events, Dorothy has performed as a soloist in various concerts, including the 2006 and 2008 Voices editions with Time to Say Goodbye and Caruso respectively. She was also one of the finalists in this year’s Eurosong contest and placed second in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza last September. Dorothy, who holds a BA in Maltese and English, is currently reading for a Postgraduate Masters Degree in Interpreting at the University of Malta.

Dorothy Bezzina will be playing the role of Lucy Harris in Masquerade’s production of Jekyll and Hyde. The musical opened with a gala night last Friday with performances today and 15, 16, 17 May at Teatru Manoel. All shows start at 8pm.

How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

I am 22, born on 5 November 1986, and I am a Scorpio.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

I am the kind of person who lives the present. I take up opportunities as they come my way.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being healthy, loved and supported by those around me... and chocolate of course!

What is your favourite occupation?

My favourite would have to be stage direction/choreography or a full-time singer/performer, although at the moment interpreting tops the list of my ideal jobs.

Significant other?

I met Karl during our sixth form years at St Aloysius College and we have been together since.

What is your greatest fear?

Illness.

What is it that you most value in your friends?

Cooperation, loyalty and a sense of humour.

How would you like to die?

I’d rather tell you how I would like to live.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Travelling, shoes and bags. I am also thinking of buying a new synthesizer at the moment.

What is your greatest regret?

I do not have any great regrets. I always tend to learn something from things which do not turn out perfectly well.

What is your most treasured possession?

I do have the tendency of hoarding quite a number of possessions, ranging from my first walkman to some of my pre-grade copybooks. However, I would definitely have to choose my voice and musical ear in this case.

Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

I would love to be able to speak more languages. I consider this a great asset, and it certainly opens doors to various opportunities. Well... it is never too late!

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Loneliness.

Where would you like to live?

My parents had spent two years in Nigeria before I was born, and I also have two uncles working as missionaries in Peru and Cuba. Such places have always fascinated me and I would not mind living there for some time, although I feel quite comfortable living in Malta, where I am close to everyone.

What is your most marked characteristic?

My voice... and my hair

perhaps.

Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

My parents. I consider myself lucky enough to have been blessed with parents, who, through their example, support and encouragement, have instilled in us good values, while allowing us the space to grow as individuals.

What is it that you most dislike?

Jealousy, hypocrisy, racism, greed,

swearing, a laissez faire attitude.
