Shanel Debatista, 22, from Pieta was crowned Miss World Malta 2009, at Montekristo Estates last Saturday.

The contest, now in its 13th edition is organised by Modelle International under the coordination of Sue Rossi and Claudia Calleja.

This is the only event which entitles a Maltese representative to participate in the Miss World International beauty pageant.

The final of Miss World will be held in November in South Africa and is expected to be viewed by an audience of 2.5 billion. Malta will be competing with another 109 countries for the coveted title.

Shanel won various trophies and other gifts, and she had the privilege of wearing a prestigious crown and sceptre sponsored by Sterling Jewellers.

Sarah Agius came in second place followed by Tiffany Pisani.

During the event, all 29

contestants wore swimwear provided by Luna of J.Piccinino Ltd and they also paraded in exclusive evening wear.

Twelve semi-finalists were then chosen and were asked to state why they should win the contest.

The show was compered by Charles Saliba. Entertainment was provided by Steve Cole and DJ Steve Caesar and guest singer Haffi Haff from Iceland.

The audience watched fashion shows by Koko, All Styles, Perfection and Buska. A team of hairstylists were responsible for the contestants’ hair: The Gallery Hair Studio, Maf, D Salon, Avantgarde, Hairoscope and Privé. Make-up was sponsored by Golden Rose cosmetics and applied by make-up Shasha and her team.

Shanel will be travelling to South Africa thanks to Lufthansa Airlines.
