Outbound tourist trips during September stood at 35,219, an increase of 17.5% over last year. Same-day visitors numbered 3,118.

The number of outbound tourist trips to EU destinations during September was estimated at 29,738, while non-EU trips stood at 5,481. Both markets (EU and non-EU) registered increases over 2009.

Italy and France registered increases while the UK and German markets declined. As in previous years, the majority of outbound tourists were males (18,977), while the largest proportion of outbound trips were carried out by those in the 25-44 age bracket, standing at 14,758.

January-September 2010

The number of outbound passengers recorded for the period under review was 215,623, up by 7% when compared to last year. Trips to EU countries comprised 85% of the total and stood at 183,792. Unlike previous years, the most popular destination was Italy, while a slight decrease in outbound trips to the UK was noted. Trips to EU destinations had an average length of stay of 7.2 nights, while the average for non-EU countries stood at 12.8 nights.

The largest proportion of outbound tourists was recorded in the 25-44 age bracket, totalling 89,401, followed by the 45-64 age bracket (67,506 tourists). A substantial increase was noted in the 0-24 age group, which registered an increase in outbound trips of 70%. The number of same-day visitors was estimated at 24,715.

Between January and September, more than half the outbound tourists made use of collective accommodation. The average length of stay in collective accommodation stood at 6.2 nights, while that recorded for private accommodation was estimated at 12.2. The majority of trips were undertaken for holiday purposes (56%). The total budgeted expenditure planned by outbound tourists during these nine months stood at €209 million, with an average expenditure of €969.5 per person.
