Applications are coming in steadily for the 13th Betfair LifeCycle Challenge, which will this year see cyclists travel through a record seven countries in 11 days, covering a total of 2,000km from Prague to Sarajevo.
Last year, 42 cyclists had taken part in the challenge, which raised €210,000 for the Renal Unit at Mater Dei, bringing the total to date to well over €1 million.
“This is a huge challenge both physically and more so psychologically. However, people should not be daunted by the prospect just because they are at a basic fitness level at this point in time,” chairperson Alan Curry said.
A thorough physical test is carried out on the HumanLab VO2 Analyser which many of the top sports teams, including Arsenal Football Club, use. This indicates to the athlete not only his fitness levels but more importantly how his body is burning fat, which is vital in an endurance event such as this.
“One thing is for sure: The LifeCycle participants get the most professional preparation available,” he said.
Those interested in taking part can apply at the LifeCycle office in Pembroke (behind the BMX track) on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 11.30am. The first meeting for cyclists will be held on 13 April at the Betfair offices in Sta Venera, a chance for all the new participants to meet and for veterans to renew old friendships.
