Project To make Valletta more accessible

Malta Independent Wednesday, 25 January 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Resources Minister George Pullicino is to apply to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to re-open a tunnel in Valletta which can be used by the public. Using it would give motorists parking in the ditch access to the capital, taking them to near South Street.

The sally port is 75 metres long. It is proposed to install two travellators, one leading up, the other down.

Excavations on site during restoration works led to the discovery of a battery from the time of the Knights, on the side of the bastion, which was not on their records. Fortifications historian Stephen Spiteri considers the battery very interesting and that it should be restored to be integrated in the project.

More parking space will be added to Valletta ditch after the removal of structures. The works will cost over €800,000.
