Zejtun C 1
Dingli S 0
Zejtun Corinthians had the better of a gallant Dingli side to go just two points behind the three leaders in the table.
The match was a tight affair with Zejtun finally having the edge over their opponents. But it must be said that Dingli deserved something better as it was a sheer unjustice that they left the pitch empty handed.
Marshalled by a brilliant Konda in midfield, Dingli never gave away an inch, even hitting the crossbar on two occasions. Even Zejtun hit the crossbar through their best player Kenneth Abela, who eventually sealed the issue in Dingli’s only defensive lapse.
Dingli had the first attempt of the match when Porcari shot slightly wide from the edge of the area. On seven minutes Kenneth Abela rose well to an Azzopardi corner, but his header missed the upright by inches.
Two minutes later Zejtun were unlucky when Kenneth Abela’s scorcher slammed against the upper part of the crossbar. Zejtun dictated matters in the first part and on 17 minutes Elzaredi passed towards Kenneth Abela who brought the best out of Jeffrey Farrugia who made a brilliant save.
On 24 minutes Zejtun goalkeeper Farrugia handled a back pass, but from the resultant freekick from near the penalty spot, the Zejtun defence managed to block Porcari’s shot.
Two minutes later Dingli were unlucky when Konda’s cross was deflected by Charlo Magro with the ball finishing against the crossbar.
In the dying minutes of the first half striker Gers Delia dribbled past Owusu but his effort was again blocked by Jeffrey Farrugia and on the other end Konda passed towards Porcari who was blocked by a desperate Ranier Farrugia sortie.
In the second half both teams had their good moments but goal scoring actions were scarce. Dingli continued to play their hearts out with Konda playing a blinder, and Owusu as usual unbeatable in defence. On 72 minutes Dingli were unlucky when the superb Konda dribbled his way inside the Zejtun penalty area but his shot slammed against the crossbar. The same Konda was again dangerous minutes later but this time experienced defender Charlo Magro managed to block his shot.
On 78 minutes Zejtun broke the deadlock. Gers Delia’s long cross split the Dingli defence apart and Kenneth Abela managed to beat Owusu on the run before hitting the ball home with the ball hitting the upright before finishing at the back of the net.
This goal swept Dingli off their feet as Giorev’s boys never recovered and never worried the Zejtun defence again.
