St George’s 1

Lija A 2

Lija put their minds at rest yesterday thanks to a deserved 2-1 victory over St George’s in a sort of relegation decider, and also thanks to the scoreless draw between St Patrick and Dingli in the other match, a result which meant that Lija are mathematically out of danger.

The Saints did the early running but on nine minutes Lija forged ahead when a Beu cross from the right was headed into his own net by defender Alan Abela.

Lija started to play better now and were unlucky when an Ige shot hit the base of the upright and on the half hour a Daniel Scerri shot was cleared off the goal line by Emanuel Sevasta

Just before the break Lija went close again with an Andre Scicluna shot that went inches wide. Ten minutes into the second half Lija doubled the score thanks to an Ige solo effort when turned past a defender and scored from an almost impossible angle.

Half way through the second half, St George’s were back in the game when Dos Santos was floored by Jean Paul Scerri and from the resultant penalty Gary Inguanez made no mistake.

The Saints increased the pressure in the remaining minutes but Lija defended well to grab three precious points.
