Three-time winner Liverpool beat Young Boys 5-3 in a thrilling Europa League opener in Switzerland yesterday, while defending champion Atletico Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win at Hapoel Tel-Aviv.

Substitute Jonjo Shelvey scored Liverpool’s fourth goal 10 minutes after coming off the bench, before sealing the result two minutes from time. Teenager Andre Wisdom scored Liverpool’s second goal on his debut, after an own goal by Juhani Ojala had given the Premier League side an early lead.

Sebastian Coates added Liverpool’s other goal in his first European match.

Raphael Nuzzolo, Ojala and Gonzalo Zarate found the net for Young Boys, which briefly led in the second half.

In Israel, Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Costa and Raul Garcia all scored as Atletico made easy work of Hapoel, despite playing without star striker Radamel Falcao, who was rested for the Group B opener.

French league leader Marseille had no such luck and had to score twice in the final eight minutes to rescue a 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce. Marseille, which has won all five of its league games this season, seemed to be heading for a surprise defeat following goals from Caner Erkin and Alex.

However, Mathieu Valbuena pulled one back for the Ligue 1 side eight minutes from time before Andre Ayew sent the vociferous home fans into despair with the final kick of the game.

Udinese also snatched a 1-1 draw late on as Antonio Di Natale’s stoppage-time strike rescued a point for the Serie A side against big-spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

Lacina Traore had given Anzhi a halftime lead.

Elsewhere, Napoli cruised to a 4-0 win over AIK Stockholm. Edu Vargas scored a hat-trick for Napoli - his first goals for the club.

Napoli’s Marek Hamsik was sent off in the closing stages but there was still time for Blerim Dzemaili to add a fourth.

Inter just salvaged a point from a

2-2 draw at home against Russia’s Rubin Kazan.

Ryazantsev shot the Russians in the lead and Livaja scored an equaliser for the Italians six minutes before the interval whistle. Rondon scored what seemed to be a shock winner for Rubin Kazan six minutes from the end. But Nagatomo scored an equaliser for Inter in added time.

In the other Group match, Partizan were held to a goalless draw at home by Neftchi.

In Group K, Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen were held to a home goalless draw by Metalist Kharkiv while Rapid Vienna were beaten 1-2 at home by Norway’s Rosenborg.

In Group A, Racing Genk obtained an impressive 3-0 win against Hungary’s Videoton, but Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon disappointed their followers as they were held to a goalless draw at home by Basle of Switzerland.

In Group J, Maribor also won comfortably 3-0 against Greece’s Panathinaikos, while Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio figured in a goalless draw at White Hart Lane.

In Group L, Twente Enschede of the Netherlands were held to a 2-2 draw by Germany’s Hannover, while Spain’s Levante defeated Helsingborgs of Sweden 1-0.

In Group I, Athletic Bilbao could only draw 1-1 at home to Kiryat, but France’s Lyon managed to start their commitments with a 2-1 win at home to Sparta Prague.
