Frekwenzi Hiemda

Malta Independent Tuesday, 6 November 2012, 09:07 Last update: about 11 years ago

Frekwenzi Hiemda is a cry for love that is sought but can never be found. And sex do not amount to the same thing, just as much as hunger and appetite do not. In the anthology Frekwenzi Œiemda, authors Tyrone Grima and Justin Schembri analyse the desire for love, the rejection of love and the exploitation of love.

The recurrent theme of being entrapped is found in the diverse metaphors that can be perceived in the short stories. This is Man transformed into a bird that is locked up in a cage; This is Man enclosed within his own room or changed into the image of love which is a fruit of his own dreams. This is Man who is enmeshed in his own deceit, or struggles with the toil of life, seeking the love that he deserves but that is indeed only a mirage in the far distance.

Therefore, every character in this anthology is identical, surrounded by diverse images that only look different externally. Frekwenzi Œiemda is like a collage that reveals a society that can only endeavour to silence whoever attempts to examine it, sweeps under the carpet all these truths that are anything but silent.

The authors, Tyrone Grima and Justin Schembri, in their collection of short stories, adopt a contemporary style that is at times based on poetry, mirroring society by communicating only in an opaque way, and not shying away from the use of vulgar language and pornographic scenes. It is through these elements that Frekwenzi Œiemda gives a voice to those cries that according to many should remain forever silent....

Tyrone Grima is 36 year old and is an Assistnat Headmaster in a Church school. Frekwenzi Œiemda is Grima’s second publication. His first novel in maltese, Celibacy, was published in 2007. Apart from his passion for literature, Grima is involved in the local theatrical scene. He wrote a number of works for the stage, most of which he directed himself. Grima is also one of the founding members of Theatrencore.

In his work for this theatre company, he has directed many plays including Sartre’s Bariona, Ionesco’s Exit the King and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. He graduated in French and Theatre Studies and is currently reading for a doctorate in Theology, within the field of spirituality, focusing on the writings of the French mystic, Simone Weil

Justin Schembri is 30 years old and teaches Maltese in a secondary school. Frekwenzi Œiemda is his first publication. He is an author of prose and poetry, and in Frekwenzi Œiemda, merged both genres, based on prose poetry,  but in a more developed manner. Schembri graduated in Maltese and plans on furthering his studies in the area of politics.

Frekwenzi Œiemda will be available during the Book Fair at the Mediterranean Conference Centre from 7 to 11 November.
