Naxxar local council to grant parking permits to residents

Malta Independent Wednesday, 8 May 2013, 09:36 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Naxxar local council has decided to grant special permits to residents in St Paul Street and its surroundings following the timed parking scheme introduced in the area last week.

Initially, the council had sent a letter to residents stating that residents affected by the scheme would be granted a parking permit/s, but residents later were told that not all would be entitled to a permit.

The introduction of the scheme, which is undergoing a three-month trial, sparked furore among residents when they realised that signs displaying restricted parking hours were erected in the above-mentioned area.

Following a story published in this portal, residents told The Malta Independent online that they have now been informed by the council by means of a letter that it will grant them special privileges, entitling each family to two permits each.

The circular read: “In the light of the introduction of the parking scheme, the council has decided to grant each family residing in the area two parking permits.

“After the council received a number of complaints regarding the scheme, it is worth pointing out that Transport Malta approved the scheme specifying that 30% of the parking space available in St Paul Street will be taken up by the scheme while in other surrounding areas 50% of parking space."

The council also said that there seemed to be a misunderstanding over who was to be entitled a permit.
