New commission head denies overlap in sport authorities

Labour MP Chris Agius, who on Saturday was named chairman of the newly set-up commission for the reform of sports in Malta, denied speculation that the commission’s role will overlap on the terms of reference on which the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport operates.

Mr Agius said that in no way will the commission overlap on other sport authorities but on the contrary will work hand in hand with them.

Yet, judging by what the KMS does and by what the newly-formed commission is expected to do, both entities seem to have a lot of common tasks.

The commission, for example, aims to conduct a number of studies to particularly boost interest in sport, especially those disciplines that didn't enjoy a strong following. This is also one of the tasks with which the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport is entrusted with.

The commission will present proposals to the minister and parliamentary secretary responsible for sport. "The reform is one of Labour's pre electoral pledges; a number of sportsmen give importance to their sport as much as they give to their family, therefore deserve to be given importance.
"I have been hearing out a number of sportsmen and club committees over the last five years and it's time to implement measures based on their concerns," Mr Agius said.
The commission will push forward proposals related to physical education, which is another task that the KMS has been carrying out in the past few years, particularly through the establishment of open air gyms and holding activities to encourage more people to do physical exercise.
