Protest against Monsanto and GMOs

Malta Independent Saturday, 25 May 2013, 19:20 Last update: about 11 years ago

Today, Malta joined more than 47 countries, 341 cities, and thousands of participants who voiced their concerns about food dominance by Monsanto – the world’s largest producer of genetically modified seeds and agro-chemicals.

Hundreds of people gathered in Valletta and joined forces with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Malta, which incidentally also had scheduled an awareness walk this morning to mark World Multiple Sclerosis Day and, as a result, permits were not issued for both activities.

World Multiple Sclerosis Day falls on Wednesday, 29 May.

The protest walk against Monsanto, which was intended to raise awareness and protest against the proliferation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), saw the participation of the Malta Organic Agriculture Movement, Friends of the Earth – Malta, Birdlife – Malta, Green Drinks Malta, Permaculture Foundation, Zminijietna Slow Food – Malta, Ramblers Malta, Gaia Foundation, Nature Trust Malta and Koperattiva Kummerc Gust.

The University of Malta Centre for Environmental Education & Research (CEER), Shirley Cauchi of Holistic Health Coaching and Angka Café facilitated the event’s organisation.
