No proof against John Dalli – Police Commissioner

Malta Independent Saturday, 8 June 2013, 20:21 Last update: about 11 years ago

According to Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit, as matters stand there is not enough evidence to arraign former European Commissioner John Dalli over allegations that led to his abrupt resignation from the European Commission last October.

Speaking on this evening’s current affairs programme Disett in an interview with journalist Reno Bugeja, Commissioner Zammit said that there was a distinct difference between EU-level administrative decisions and criminal investigations, which require hard proof to charge someone with a crime.

An extract of the interview was aired on PBS News this evening before Disett went to air.

When contacted yesterday, Mr Dalli expressed a degree of relief and said, “After months of anguish caused mainly by politically motivated leaks in the press and during the election campaign, I can now concentrate on fully restoring my integrity as well as Malta's name at an international level, which is of the utmost importance.”

Mr Dalli also signalled his intention to proceed with the court cases he had instituted last December before the Belgian Criminal Court - a case of defamation against Swedish Match for maliciously spreading fabricated information, and another in the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg for the annulment of President Barroso’s decision to terminate his term as European Commissioner.
