AD shares European Green Party’s disappointment on Dublin III

Malta Independent Wednesday, 12 June 2013, 10:40 Last update: about 11 years ago

The European Green Party considers the new asylum rules curently being discussed in the European parliament as a "massive missed opportunity" a view shared by Alternattiva Demokratika.

Robert Callus AD spokesperson for immigration said "While we believe that the issue of immigration is much wider than counting numbers and that until lately both PN and PL have only given lip service to the issue of integrating immigrants, it is imperative that the EU too starts to practice real solidarity.

The European Green Party is to be the only party at a European level to realize that a sense of fairness towards both asylum seekers and countries in the periphery of Europe when it comes to the distribution of immigrants is necessary if every country is to keep on believing in the European project"

Prof Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said: "We totally agree with green MEP Jean Lambert who stated in parliament that the system by which asylum seekers are sent back to the EU member states they first entered to have their asylum application dealt with - like Malta-, is based on totally false premises.

An elected Alternattiva MEP would back this position reforming this Dublin convention requirement which is detrimental to Malta".
