Maltese nudists in favour of civil unions

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 October 2013, 11:16 Last update: about 11 years ago

The ‘Legalize nudist beaches and topless bathing in Malta’ facebook pressure group are “very happy that the government has introduced the civil union bill”, but now they expect another step – the legalisation of nudist beaches.

In a statement, the group said that the government must not just focus on one group as there are many other minority groups that all want rights. PL promised rights to all minority groups and said that Malta belongs to everyone.

“In our case, we believe that articles 40 and 41 of the Maltese constitution should not have any contradictory laws such as those that inhibit the legalisation of naturist beaches and topless bathing,” the group said.

These Constitutional articles guarantee full freedom of conscience and of religious worship and that no person shall be hindered in the enjoyment of his freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions without interference.

Both PN and PL seem to be supporting groups that have a very good lobbying system while avoiding those that may be more controversial. The reason is mainly fear of losing votes

In our case the government fears that the mentality of the majority of Maltese people is still narrow minded.

“The times have changed! Bikinis and G-strings were once illegal! Naturism is defined as a liberating lifestyle and belief which encourages self-respect, respect for others and for the environment, and embodies freedom and a unique sense of communion with nature .It is purposefully non-erotic and non-sexual and engenders a wholesome appreciation of self and others.”
