Organic Agriculture Movement welcomes Malta’s stand on GMOs

Malta Independent Thursday, 20 February 2014, 08:02 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Malta Organic Agriculture Movement (MOAM) welcomes the stand  taken by Deputy Prime Minister, Louis Grech when declaring loud and clear in the High European Institution that  the majority of Europeans citizens  including Maltese are against the cultivation of Genetically Modified Plants .

Hon. Grech did not mince his words in declaring that Malta would vote against GMOs in the highest European institutions.

MOAM claims ,  that GMOs do not only have a negative impact on the environment and the biodiversity, but GM plants cultivation distort the  FAIR trade and un-balance the sustainable future of a free market for agriculture products and the food chain, as the food supply becomes more and more dominated by a few multinational corporations.

The threat from GMOs on the environment comes from the fact that these organisms suppress biodiversity with the loss of local seed varieties and further more farmers become totally dependent on foreign multi-national companies that own the Patent of GM seeds and loose the right to keep their own seeds over successive years.

Moreover, the herbicide resistant plants, known as “Roundup Ready”, encourage a higher use of herbicides, artificial fertilizers and synthetic chemicals that are the major cause to soil depletion, biodiversity and humans.

The NGO MOAM was established in 1999 with the main objective of promoting Organic Agriculture with Maltese farmers and consumers through various educational courses and to serve as a lobby to promote sustainable agriculture in political circles.  MOAM is also a full member of the International Federation of Organic Movements (IFOAM-EU)
