€3.5 million for new Bahrija drainage system

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 April 2014, 16:01 Last update: about 11 years ago

Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg today announced a €3.5 million project to connect Bahrija to the national drainage system.

“To date there are still around 500 households in Bahrija being deprived of a drainage system.  This Government has thus felt it necessary to invest €3.5 million from cohesion funds so that all Bahrija residents can benefit from an adequate drainage system that suits today’s’ needs,” said Dr Borg. The project will be carried out by the Water Services Corporation in the coming weeks and months.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that this project will not only enhance property value and improve the quality of life of the residents of Bahrija, Ghajn Kajjet, Tas-Salvatur and Bieb ir-Ruwa, but it will also safeguard those fields that used to experience several difficulties because of the drainage that used to gather and get emptied in one cesspit.

Ian Borg also announced that the new church dedicated to St. Martin in Bahrija has also been granted European Funds to install photovoltaic panels so that cleaner and alternative energy can be generated.  This will also help significantly reduce its electricity bills. This investment forms part of a bigger project that will see similar installations on another 35 parishes around the Maltese Islands.

Dr. Borg said that this government was committed to keep on working in favour of small communities such as Bahrija and its residents.
