Abortion: We will rest on the government’s assurances – Busuttil

Malta Independent Wednesday, 23 April 2014, 12:47 Last update: about 11 years ago

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil today said that he is willing to rest on the government’s assurances that abortion will not be introduced in Malta, but continued to question Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s consistency on other issues.

Speaking during a visit to Arkadia shopping centre in Gozo, Dr Busuttil said that Dr Muscat has already flip-flopped on other matters like gay adoption.

Dr Busuttil said that prior to the election, Dr Muscat made it clear that he does not agree with gay adoption, and no reference was made to it in the Labour Party’s election manifesto, yet it was still introduced by the Labour government.

Yesterday, Dr Busuttil claimed that the government is discriminating on the basis of political allegiances in the way it distributed medicines under the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme.

Asked for tangible proof to back up these claims, Dr Busuttil said that there have been various media reports about the alleged discrimination, and yesterday a pharmacist publicly declared that certain patients were being given preference over others.

Dr Busuttil said that those in Labour’s “inner-circle” often take to phoning the Health Ministry directly in order to receive their medicines more expediently.
