MUMN says government is ‘anti-democratic’

Malta Independent Thursday, 24 April 2014, 08:40 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses said it cannot accept the “anti-democratic” stand the government is taking in its regard, and is prepared to take all necessary steps to see that justice is done.

On 24 March, the union said in a statement, the MUMN wrote to the government’s principal permanent secretary and asked for sole recognition as the representative of the social workers employed in the public sector. It also asked for the government to stop negotiations with another union because the MUMN enjoyed the majority of membership in the sector.

But the government continued its negotiations with the union, which the MUMN said represents the minority of workers. Social workers, the union said, are complaining that their issues are being discussed with a union that does not represent them

The MUMN said it cannot accept such a situation and will be calling for a meeting to decide the way forward.
