Bail denied for two men charged with BOV San Gwann murder in 2000

Malta Independent Friday, 11 July 2014, 11:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Two men, James Vella, 33 from Qormi and Christopher Scerri, 35 from Pieta today pleaded not guilty to the murder of Alphonse Ferriggi in San Gwann.

Vella told the Court that he "knows nothing about the case."

Inspectors Chris Pullicino and Keith Arnaud said that they have fresh evidence based on the testimony of Richard Grech, 41, who was jailed for life for the murder in 2011.

They said Grech's testimony led to a fresh review of the case, and all the witnesses were spoken to again.

The Inspectors pointed out that the men, who are both unemployed, have criminal records and are not people you can trust on the outside.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella denied bail to the two men.

Ferriggi had been killed outside the BOV branch in San Gwann when he was carrying a bag containing just postal material.

An accomplice, Joseph Zammit, had been sentenced to 30 years.
