Wenzu Mintoff to be appointed judge; DOI biography omits PL connection

Malta Independent Wednesday, 16 July 2014, 14:44 Last update: about 11 years ago

Former Labour Party MP Wenzu Mintoff will be appointed judge tomorrow.

Dr Mintoff was elected as an MP for the Labour Party in 1987 but clashed with the party and resigned the post of president, moving to be the co-founder of Alternattiva Demokratika, with whom he also contested an election in 1992.

Later, he moved back to the Labour Party and was recently editor of the PL newspaper Kullhadd.

The Cabinet approved his appointment today.

Dr Mintoff, 54, is married to Geraldine and they have a daughter. He attended De La Salle College and graduated from University as a Notary Public in 1983 and a year later as a lawyer.

The Government's Department of Information statement giving details of his biography did not mention Dr Mintoff's political involvement in the Labour Party, but did speak of his AD connection.

The statement says he was an MP between 1987 and 1992 but did not say that in the middle of the legislature he switched sides from Labour to AD. Neither did the DOI statement mention his being editor of the PL newspaper.

For a time, as a lawyer he worked in the Attorney General's office and was chairman of the Malta Development Corporation.
