Kayak for Charity Challenge successfully completed

Malta Independent Monday, 21 July 2014, 15:38 Last update: about 11 years ago

38 hours and 51 minutes after their departure, the Kayak for Charity team arrived back at Marsamxett Boat house on Sunday night, raising €7163 for Inspire Foundation.

The team of two, Maltese Ian Laferla and Italy-born Andrea Scorcia managed to successfully complete the return crossing Valletta-Pozzallo-Valletta on board of a double kayak.

Climbing up the quay ladder, after more than 150000 paddle strokes, Ian and Andrea were all emotional, torn between the elation of completing the challenge – within the time limit – and the knowledge that this unique challenge is over.

The team left Valletta on Saturday at 06:00 and kayaked all the way to Pozzallo, where they arrived at 22:05. After some rest and stretching, Ian and Andrea left Pozzallo in the early hours of Sunday morning and arrived back at Marsamxett at 20:51.

Kayak for Charity has been using sports in aid of worthy causes since 2008, and this year's challenge, supported by Frank Salt Real Estate, is in aid of Inspire, the Foundation for Inclusion that helps over 1000 babies, children and adults with learning and physical disabilities, reach their fullest potential by providing educational, therapeutic and leisure services.
