The situation in Libya was the focal point of discussions held by the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his British counterpart David Cameron on the fringes of the Commonwealth Games which will start today.

“The Libyan Parliament is supposed to meet, however certain factions in Libya don’t want this to happen," Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said at the end of the encounter. "It is imperative that the clash between these parties comes under control so that the Libyan people will be heard and new representatives can meet to make the necessary government promotions to posts”.

Lack of security in Libya will result in an increased immigration problem, Dr Muscat said. In addition, Libya is a crucial trading partner of Malta and holds a lot of Maltese investment.

The Prime Minister emphasised his hope for diplomacy to work, however he explained that it must be made clear that if United Nations intervention is needed and called for by the Libyan people  to help the secure their country, then the international community must be ready to take this courageous decision and help secure the country quickly.

Dr Muscat added that there is no need for a new UN resolution, as the resolution which resulted in air strikes which took place at the beginning of the Libyan revolution is still in force. Through this resolution there are options to help the relevant Libyan authority regain control of their country and get rid of the extremist elements that are perilous to the stability of the country.

Discussing Russia, the Prime Ministers discussed the types of sanctions taken and the importance of the EU speaking with a united voice.
