Malta Independent Wednesday, 23 July 2014, 11:02 Last update: about 11 years ago

A national trade union forum comprising 22 trade unions was launched this morning by President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca.

Manuel Debono, director at the centre of Labour Studies ,said that this forum would serve as a platform to encourage unions to be more proactive and better updated on social and economic policies. Dr Debono said that trade unions need engage in lifelong learning, and ensure acceptance of diversity in the workplace. He said although 50% of employees in Malta form part of a trade union, one of the highest in the world, unions still face the challenge of being relevant and such a forum would serve to strengthen their position.

President Coleiro Preca described the launch as a historical step, adding that various trade unions have common interests. An awareness campaign regarding safety at the place of work will be launched in the upcoming weeks.
