Motive behind Msida attempted murder still unknown

Malta Independent Thursday, 24 July 2014, 13:50 Last update: about 11 years ago

The motive behind the attempted murder of Vince Muscat known as 'Il-Kohhu' is still unknown, Inspector Keith Arnoud said in court today.

Jonathan Pace, 31, known for his butcher shop, 'Tyson Butcher' is being charged with the attempted murder. Call records show that three days before the accident, Vince Muscat contacted the accused.

On 7 April of this year, six bullets were fired at Vince Muscat in Msida, with three hitting him and the other three going astray. He was hit in the neck and hand while a third bullet grazed him. Subsequently, he was certified to be in a critical condition but after some days, his health improved and he was sent home, although he is still receiving medication.

Back in 2010, Muscat was accused with attempted murder of two police officers during a failed bank robbery which took place at the HSBC headquarters in Qormi.  30 shots were fired, allegedly by Muscat at the police.

Inspector Keith Arnoud said that during his four visits to Vince Muscat in hospital, the latter never admitted to knowing his perpetrator. During one particular visit, he told the inspector that even if he did know, it is useless disclosing the information to the police. The inspector made it clear to Muscat that it is his responsibility to tell the police.

However, on the eve before the arraignment, Muscat said it was Jonathan Pace who shot him.

Inspector Keith Arnoud said that  CCTV footage featured the rental car used during the attempted murder.  A list acquired from the rental company revealed that Christopher Pace had indeed rented the car a few days before the incident, however the postal address and mobile number Pace provided to the company were incorrect.

A few days after the incident, the car was found burned.

Magistrate Carol Peralta adjourned the case to the 30th of July, where compilation of evidence will continue at Muscat's residence, given he can't make it to court due to health problems.

Lawyer Gianella DeMarco appeared for the accused.
