PBS loses live transmission as Nathan Xuereb misses out on medal in shooting

Maltese sports lovers ended up disappointed this afternoon as youngster Nathan Lee Xuereb missed out on winning a bronze medal in a shoot-out for third place against an Indian shooter in the double-trap shooting competition at the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow.

Their disappointment was compounded by the fact that PBS lost the live feed of the event as the two shooters were going for the medal, and it was only regained for the last four shots. By then, the Indian shooter had already accumulated a two-clay advantage which he kept till the end for a 26-24 score in his favour (out of 30 clays). A. Mohd won the bronze medal while Nathan Xuereb finished fourth.

Earlier, Xuereb, 17, was one clay away from a shoot-off for a place in the final, but missed his last clay of the 30-clay semi-final. This took him to the final for third place, which he then lost. Three shooters hit 27, while Xuereb hit 26. A shoot-off was then required for the best two to go for gold while the third, Mohd, missed one clay, and was "relegated" for a battle for the bronze medal.

PBS viewers watched the semi-final in full and the shoot-off that was needed. But when the battle for the bronze was about to start the transmission was lost. For a few minutes the screen went blank until it was replaced by athletics competitions, with the commentator trying to keep viewers updated with what was going on at the shooting range.

It was only late in the day that the transmission from the range was resumed.

The other Maltese competitor, William Chetcuti, finished seventh and was eliminated.
