12 months prison for injuring police constable

39 –year old Joseph Sharfid, who resides in St Julian’s was sentenced to 12 months prison, after he was found guilty of injuring a police constable.

He was also found guilty of damaging a police car.

On 30 March 2012, police approached Mr Sharfid, who was driving a Kia Mento. Mr Sharfid was being charged with breaching bail conditions. The accused managed to escape for a while, however when he got stuck in traffic, the police constable approached the car. At that point, Mr Sharfid drove off, injuring the constable on the way.  

Testifying in court, a psychiatrist said that the accused failed to take his medication.

Mr Sharfid said he feared police officers would attempt to kill him, hence he escaped.

The court ruled that the accused should be admitted to the forensic ward at Mount Carmel.
