The Court has decided on the name of the replica arch being built near the Fleur-de-Lys roundabout, calling it “Wignacourt’s Arch”.
Mr Justice Tonio Mallia chose the name following years of debate between the Santa Venera and Birkirkara local councils.
Work on the project began a few weeks ago at a cost of around €280,000, that will be partially financed by Bank of Valletta. The original arch was built in 1615 and was damaged on two separate incidents during WW2.
The Santa Venera Local Council originally wanted to call the arch after Grand Master Wignacourt while the Birkirkara Council wanted to name it after Fleur-de-Lys.
Dr Richard Sladden appeared for the Birkirkara council and Dr Luciano Busuttil represented the Santa Venera council.
