Malta Independent Friday, 22 August 2014, 16:57 Last update: about 11 years ago

Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella said that Opposition spokesman for Foreign Affairs Carm Mifsud Bonnici was wrong to claim that he (the minister) did not condemn the executions being carried out in Iraq by ISIS and other armed groups.

“As stated in a press release issued last week,  in the last extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, held on 15 August, I not only expressed my concern with the deterioration of the security situation in Iraq but condemned the attacks perpetrated by ISIL and other armed groups.

“In the same meeting both myself and all other Foreign Ministers unanimously expressed deep concern with regard to the humanitarian situation in the country and massive displacement of civilians,” Dr Vella said.

Minister Vella was replying to what Dr Mifsud Bonnici’s said in an interview with The Malta Independent.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici hit out at the minister “for not having deplored the executions in Iraq.”

Dr Vella had told this newspaper that he was deeply concerned over the situation in Iraq and that Isis may have Libya on its cards.

Dr Vella also went as far as stating that Malta needs to review its military defence provisions just in case Isis or any other belligerent force tries to infiltrate our islands.

Dr Vella also said that he was highly concerned at the Islamic State being more of an extremist group then al Qaeda.
