MOAS saves more migrants in coordinated rescue operations with Rome

The Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) saved more than 300 migrants at sea in coordinated rescue operations with Rome over the weekend.

One recue was conducted on Saturday under the guidance of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Rome while another took place this morning after Italian authorities reported that a vessel was in distress: a wooden fishing boat with 227 Syrian and Palestinian migrants on board.

The boat consisted of 130 men, 40 women and 57children, including many infants. The migrants were taken on board Phoenix and given first aid. They were kept on board overnight until being transferred to an an Italian boat this morning.

At the same time, the MOAS spotted another migrant boat, this time a rubber dinghy, carrying 96 men from sub-­Saharan Africa. MOAS provided life jackets and water while also coordinating with a US warship Samuel B. Roberts and two merchant vessels.
