Senglea monuments

One reader observes that this newspaper reported last Sunday that Senglea is to have a new monument commemorating the Seafarer, Sailor, and Barklor. “What a great idea and how lovely to commemorate such industrious people,” he says.

“But, on the other hand, how sad that Senglea also has a monument for those who lost their lives in the last wars. However, it has been in desperate need of repair for a number of years, but to date it seems that there are no funds to do this. I feel disheartened because listed there are some of my relatives who lost their lives in the last war.”

Santa Lucija track in a pitiful state

A reader has sent in recent photos of the Santa Lucija track, which is clearly in a pitiful state. The reader stresses that one cannot make use of the track for jogging or walking without risking injury.

Most of the track, which is used by many people, has also become invisible, as can be seen from photos, due to a lack of maintenance.

Cashiers forced to stand

A leading chain of supermarkets strictly forbids their cashiers from sitting down while on duty. A reader says she understands the reason given for this “cruelty” is to ensure that customers do not leave unpaid items in their trolleys when checking out, but says that cashiers could always stand up just once, before finalising the bill, to check whether a customer’s trolley has indeed been emptied of all items. The reader wonders what the directors of these supermarkets would have to say if they were made to stand up for long hours at a stretch during their working day – instead of sitting down comfortably all day long on their plush, reclining armchairs. The reader is sure the OHSA has ways and means of ensuring that a more humane treatment can be found for these poor employees. If not, the OHSA would be yet another toothless regulatory setup.

Gozo ferry passenger exit blocked – again

The blocking of passenger exits on the Gozo ferry has been a recurring issue in these columns that remains unaddressed. This week another reader highlights how Gozo Channel seems to regularly allow cars to be parked right in front of a passenger exit.

The reader questions the wisdom of this practice and asks whether it is in conformity with maritime laws.

New project in Bormla

The recently unveiled, long-awaited and splendid Dock 1 project was marred by irresponsible litter-louts just days after it was opened to the public. A reader asks where has civic pride and responsibility for one’s own rubbish gone?

School rubble illegally dumped

Rubble generated from the refurbishment of the Girls Secondary School in Rabat, Gozo is being illegally dumped in a field in Gharb. The field is question is in Triq Albert W. Ketelby, parallel with Triq Frangisk Portelli. A reader sent in a map of the area involved.

Longstanding pothole

This large pothole at the junction of Pantar Road and Valletta Road, Mosta, first appeared months ago. A reader solicits attention from the apparently unconcerned authorities concerned. Does anyone even care, he asks.
